With just weeks to go before the gubernatorial primary, some candidates are going back to campus to campaign.
Jack Ciatarelli, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Rep. Mikie Sherrill were at Montclair State University on Friday to film the series “Cooking with Koppell.”
The cooking series gives the gubernatorial candidates the opportunity to prepare and share a meal with Montclair State University President Jonathan Koppell while discussing their candidacy.
Jon Bramnik, Sean Spiller and Bill Spadea have also recently been on the show.
Jack Ciatarelli prepared meatballs with the university president while sharing fond reflections on the importance of enjoying a traditional meal with his family.
When asked what his experience with the university president and students was like, he said, “What a great family affair. What a great, magnificent experience for the students themselves to be part of the studio operation like that and they did a magnificent job from beginning to end.”
Rep. Sherrill prepared what she called "Eggs Montclair," a twist on eggs Benedict, due to her family’s use of Taylor ham instead of Canadian bacon.
“It was nice to talk about family stuff and why we’re cooking this instead of some of the heavier stuff that we cover a lot,” said Rep. Sherrill.
And Mayor Ras Baraka, a pescatarian, prepared salmon with a side of zucchini as he joked about his interest in eating instead of cooking.
“I think it’s incredibly important to get young people involved and make sure that they are civically inclined, to make sure that they vote, and participate because most of the things that we’re talking about are going to affect them and they’re going to be in charge of it in a couple of years,” said Mayor Baraka.
The entire production is done by Montclair State University students and recent graduates.
“It’s amazing. This is where I want to be in life and seeing how a professional set runs is amazing,” said Jayla Pierce, junior.
“We do need more support for higher education and one way to do that is to bring folks on to campus to see all the great stuff that’s going on, to see how the opportunities to learn are setting our students up on a pathway to success,” said Dr. Koppell.
The segment with Jack Ciatarelli will air on News 12+ on May 11. Rep. Sherrill’s episode airs on May 18. And Mayor Baraka’s episode will air on May 25.
