CitySquash is a nonprofit organization located in East Tremont that provides students from economically disadvantaged households with resources.
Students join CitySquash in third or sixth grade and get support from the program until they graduate from college.
Terence Li, the executive director, says that has been their goal since Day 1.
"Our overarching goal was to help open doors of opportunity for students and children in this neighborhood with the real goal being college access and graduation," says Li.
The program provides students with a year-round program including squash, tutoring, mentoring, community service, travel, high school placement, college prep, career services and more.
Middle school student Jesus is applying to boarding school through the program and says none of this would be possible without this program.
"What keeps me here is the staff, I love them they're like a second family and the sport is great," says Jesus.
One-hundred percent of CitySquash students graduate from high school, and 97% have gone to college.
Over $33 million of financial aid scholarships have been awarded to CitySquash students.
In order to join the program, the student must be enrolled in one of the following schools: Thomas C. Giordano Middle School 45, PS 205, Jonas Bronck Academy, I.S. 254, Mt. Carmel Academy, or P.S. 82.
