The nonprofit network Grassroots Grocery gathered fresh food to deliver to Bronx and Harlem residents in need just before Easter Sunday.
Around 100 volunteers came to unload thousands of pounds worth of excess food donated by the Huntspoint Terminal Produce Market.
When the volunteers leave, they will deliver the food to 28 locations including community centers, public housing sites and places of worship.
Grassroots Grocery founder Dan Zauderer says it is especially important to support the community during the holiday weekend.
"There are working people that are just trying to do the best for their families that are dealing with these rising food prices and lack of access to healthy food,” he said. “On a holiday weekend, there should be no family that has to deal with making a choice about what kind of food to put on the dinner plate.”
