The Norwalk and Milford oyster festivals have been canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020 Oyster Festival in Milford was scheduled for Aug. 15, but organizers say it was in everyone's best interest and safety to cancel the event.

The event is planned to be held Aug. 21, 2021.

The 43rd annual Norwalk Oyster Festival was also canceled, which was originally scheduled for September.

The Norwalk Seaport Association says it is making the difficult decision to prioritize public health.

The annual event raises over $100,000 each year to help maintain the Sheffield Island lighthouse and continue educational programs.

The association says its planning to hold the event in 2021.
