Bronx sites in Norwood say they are not happy after discovering this, that a mural in their community has been vandalized. News. Trump's Eli Murillo spoke with the artist behind the artwork and has more on her efforts to get the mural restored, chipped paint and graffiti now covers a wall originally full of color designed by artist Laura Alvarez along East 207th Street and Bainbridge Avenue, Norwood. Residents that walk by say they are frustrated and in disbelief to me, it's very selfish. Presented by our bridge is a collaborative effort for Laura who involved community members for the finished product. She says murals saw a spike in vandalism during the pandemic and receiving the news from a neighbor was disheartening. I don't know, I guess because there was less people on the streets and it was easier just to go and tag it and nobody was going to tell you anything because that mural was good for a long time. I mean, it ruins the work because it did look pretty before, but now nobody respects no more. It's hard to keep anything looking good. Laura's next step is to get the mural restored but she says funding is needed to do. So we've been reaching out to a council member to the community board. I don't know if anybody has any idea they can reach out to me or reach out to our bridge and we'll be more than happy to talk to anybody about it. A hope for the colorful expression of art that once was to return. It shouldn't be put out there on top of somebody else's. One Bronx artist is calling on the community to bring a mural that was vandalized in Norwood back to life News Twelve's Eli Murillo has more on the campaign that can make it happen and how you can get involved. The mural you see behind me, here is what Bronx artist, Laura Alvarez calls a community effort. It was not only painted by her but neighbors here along East 207th Street and Bainbridge Avenue back in 2018. But if you take a closer look behind me, it's now tagged and needs some work. A new campaign to revamp the mural is now live accepting donations from community members that will be matched by Con Edison making effort twice as helpful. I know there's a lot of people willing to help, not with the whole funds, but with a little bit and now everything piles up and makes up the funding. We need all of this in an effort to clean up and bring the mural. Laura says, neighbors called for years ago back. She says before the mural, community members complained about trash and graffiti. So for Laura, this initiative goes beyond just repainting by painting it and cleaning, clearing. Now all the area, we hope to have it back how it was back when we did it the first time that it was really nice and people would go there take pictures. It was like an iconic place to go in Norwood. Laura tells me she's hoping to schedule some events prior to the repainting here to gather some ideas from community members, but also as an outreach to anyone who'd like to volunteer for more information.
