The city is intensifying outreach and loosening traditional shelter intake procedures to accommodate more New Yorkers during this week’s frigid temperatures.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday said that 10 people were found dead outside following extremely cold weather over the past several days.
The NYPD is reporting that only 9 people were found dead outdoors.
While causes of death haven't been determined, Mamdani said that this is a reminder to stay inside and to protect anyone seen out in the cold.
Calls to 311 are now being directed to 911 to ensure faster response times.
Hospitals were asked to limit overnight discharges to keep people indoors.
The mayor's office has opened 10 new warming shelters since the Friday before the winter storm that dumped a foot of snow in many parts of the city. Ten warming buses have been added throughout the boroughs.
