New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman slammed illegal gun trafficking Tuesday.
"This gun represents the problem" he said of a firearm seized last year. "It was initially sold in Florida, before being trafficked into New York, and got into the hands of a criminal who was trying to sell it on our streets."
His office released an interactive map depicting gun trafficking trends across the state.
Handgun-related violence has plagued New York despite some of the toughest gun laws in the country.
The map shows what types of weapons have been recovered, where they were found and where they originated.
Authorities recovered nearly 53,000 illegal guns between 2010 and last year, data shows. Most of them came from outside of New York -- around 74 percent.
Those guns came from what's called the "iron pipeline," states along the Interstate 95 corridor that have lax gun laws. Those states include Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.
Last week, prosecutors in Brooklyn charged more than a dozen people accused of trafficking guns into the city from South Carolina.
