Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were denied entry at the Women In Need shelter Wednesday night, according to The New York Daily News.

The New York Daily News said the agents showed the guard a photo of a person they wanted to detain but were denied entry after they failed to show a warrant.

The director at the shelter said this was only an attempt to instill fear in the city's homeless population.

ICE spokeswoman Rachael Yong Yow denied that ICE sent an enforcement team to the shelter and said that enforcement occurs on a daily basis, according to the New York Daily News.

A staff attorney in the Homeless Rights Project at the Legal Aid Society issued a statement condemning the attempted raid saying " The response by WIN shelter staff when confronted by ICE agents who did not have a judicial warrant is an excellent example of effective protocol and success in protecting their residents. We urge other city shelters and immigrant communities to remain on high alert, and we will continue educating and preparing our clients and all immigrant New Yorkers to know their rights during encounters with ICE."
