Some much needed improvements are coming to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, according to the New York City Department of Transportation.
The DOT says the changes are supposed to help reconnect the surrounding communities to the expressway. The potential changes were based on community feedback from over 2,600 survey responses.
There has been a lot of concern from the community over traffic on the expressway and the lack of green space for neighbors, so the plan will address some of those issues.
Referring to a graphic of the changes, the areas marked in green on the expressway shows the areas where the DOT plans to create greenways to improve traffic and recreational opportunities for neighbors. Those five areas include Leif Ericson Park, from 5th Avenue to 2nd Avenue, the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway in Sunset Park and the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway along the Hamilton Avenue and Gowanus connector.
For those of you who are all too familiar with the congestion on the BQE, the blue squares located within the Bay Ridge area show areas where the DOT plans on improving loading zones in neighborhoods along the BQE. Red Hook, Sunset Park and the Brooklyn Navy Yard will all be part of the clean truck program expansion to help reduce diesel exhaust emissions.
The Department of Transportation says these improvements are set to start this year.
