A local hospital is not just saving lives, but trying to save the planet as well.

NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi is moving in the green direction.

"We're starting with these photo voltaic and wind turbine-driven individual lights,” says NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi CEO Christopher Mastromano.

The lights are spread across the hospital's grounds, giving new clean light to the campus.

Mastromano says they are going to install 22 of them and replace 36 antiquated lights on campus.  

Some of the lights date back to World War II. Mastromano says the old lights will be replaced by LED lights.

The $11 million energy saving project is a step toward New York’s plan to reduce its carbon footprint.

Mastromano says when finished, it will save about 135,000 kilowatt hours annually. That equates to powering about 25 homes.
