NYC Health + Hospitals are set to close its detox centers, according to a report by The City.
The inpatient detox units are special sections dedicated to helping patients who are addicted to drugs or alcohol. They get help to wean off of the substances with a 24-hour a day staff.
According to The City, some are outraged with the plan since they believe it will fill up already busy emergency rooms.
News 12 reached out to the representatives of NYC Health + Hospitals and they say the change is more of a transition. They say a new model will be in place to provide more substantial treatment, especially since those who need help can't be admitted unless they've used within 48 hours.
The Brooklyn sites that are scheduled to transition to the new model are NYC Health + Hospitals/ Coney Island, Kings County and Woodhull. None of the Bronx facilities have detox units, but they do have the service and they treat patients on the medicine floor.
