NYC officials: Avoid the outdoors, stay cool during oppressive heat in the Bronx
People are encouraged to stay inside in air conditioning and to avoid activity outdoors.
The Bronx is bracing for what's expected to be its first heat wave of the summer, bringing oppressive temperatures that could be dangerous if not taken seriously.
City officials say temperatures will climb into the 90s for three or more days this week.
Local doctors say to be aware of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion typically presents with dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating and nausea.
People are encouraged to stay inside in air conditioning and to avoid activity outdoors. Bronx residents can look for cooling centers across the borough - including the Soundview Library.
"Right now, this is tremendous. It's just too much to bear. Right now. I'm actually feeling a little chest pain because I suffer from asthma and this is not good for me. I'll get ready to go sit in the shade for a while," said Bronx resident Charlie.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control, heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths across the United States. For those who can't avoid the heat, it's suggested that you avoid excessive activity outdoors and drink plenty of water.
"Even if you're going inside an air-conditioned building for a little bit and then going back out," says Dr. Irina Sanjeevan of Maimonides Medical Center. "Just try to mitigate that."
