Tenants living at the Twin Parks Northeast development say they’ve had enough with the lack of adequate heating in their apartments.
On Wednesday, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams took a tour of some of those freezing cold units in the housing complex.
Cece Mantos, 86, says she’s been forced to wear several layers in her own apartment, saying she spends most of her days covered in heavy blankets to combat the cold. Tenants say the heat has been an issue for years.
The Public Advocate’s Office has named the New York City Housing Authority the worst landlord in the city for the second straight year. According to
the landlord watch list released by Williams’ office, NYCHA had over 73,500 more cases this year than last year.
Williams is calling on the federal government to release billions of dollars in Department of Housing and Urban Development funding earmarked specifically for NYCHA that was approved by lawmakers this year.
In a statement, NYCHA responded to Williams’ visit:
“It is a fact that NYCHA buildings are starving from decades of federal disinvestment - with harsh weather only compounding these conditions. NYCHA staff...worked around the clock throughout the holiday weekend and continue to work nonstop to restore heat and water service where needed.”
