Because supplies are limited, high-risk residents will be prioritized.
Mayor Eric Adams said on Twitter that his team will not rest and that these pills will prevent serious illness and hospitalization.
Merck's pill, Molnupiravir, was found to be 30% effective at preventing hospitalization and death in clinical trials, while Rockland-based Pfizer's pill, Paxlovid, tested even better at 89%.
