Parents may be breathing a sigh of relief as the threat of a school bus strike comes to an end.

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181 New York City school bus workers reached a tentative agreement with five major bus providers. Tomas Fret, the local 1181 president, called it, "a contract that not only improves the lives of our hardworking members but also enhances the safety and reliability of school bus services for our communities."

Due to issues like wage parity, in August, more than 90% of the local school bus transit union voted in favor of a strike action. The strike could have impacted between 85,000 to 150,000 students in the city.

The ATU international president, John Costa, called the deal monumental saying, "They stood united, and because of their strength and solidarity, they now have a strong tentative agreement that recognizes their commitment and dedication to providing safe and reliable transportation for our most precious cargo, our students.”

The tentative agreement won’t be finalized until members of the local union vote to approve it. This vote will happen in the upcoming weeks.

In the meantime, negotiation efforts will continue to reach an agreement with three more bus companies.
