New Yorkers are now able
once again to ride the subway at any time of the day.
The New York City subway
system is back operating 24 hours a day.
Trains were forced to close
for parts of the evening in May of 2020 during the height of the pandemic.
City and transit officials
had to ensure subway stations were clean.
Hundreds of employees used UV lights and anti-microbial sprays to ensure
safety.
The MTA says it has adjusted
its cleaning operations. Stations will be disinfected twice a day, and subway
cars will be cleaned at least once a day.
They say the focus will be cleaning at the end of the terminals before other
riders get into the train.
Some of those traveling on the subway Monday tell News 12 they are optimistic
about the changes, while others say they are nervous to go back to crowded
trains.
In order to combat crime on
the subway, MTA officials say they want 600 to 800 officers on the subway.
They
say they are working with police to dispatch more officers into the system and
provide mental health services.
