Mayor Eric Adams announced today that New York City will be opening humanitarian emergency response and relief centers for asylum seekers.

The centers are expected to offer shelter, food, medical care, case work services and more. The first one is set to open in the Bronx, near Orchard Beach, and will only be for single adults. The city is planning to open a family center at a different location. 

The Orchard beach location will be in the parking lot of the beach, and will be comprised of five tents. The center will be able to hold up to 1,000 adults, and the city will provide transportation to the site. The tents will be weatherized when temperatures begin to drop in the coming weeks. 

The centers are not meant to be permanent residences for those seeking asylum - officials say that people should only need to stay in these facilities for one to four days, although they are flexible if more time is needed. 

Officials stressed that people would need to go through normal placement for city shelters if they do choose to go that route.
