The Brooklyn organization NYC Together is working to make sure students have the support and resources they need as schools close due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

The nonprofit wants to make sure students they work with are keeping up with the virtual work that the Department of Education plans to distribute next week.

Executive Director Dana Rachlintells News 12 they are working on enlisting adults in the community to help their 45 students. Those helpers will be virtual tutors helping teens stay on track academically, while also checking to make sure they aren’t in need of anything else. 

The organization already plans to donate care packages with essential food and household products to each student. So far, they have 12 people committed to tutoring and they’re also looking to provide students with iPads and laptops to help them access the online coursework. 

As of now, they have commitments for five devices. Rachlin tells News 12 the goal is to not have students fall behind. 

“We want to make sure we are sourcing as much community support as possible to kind of pick up the burden to make sure our young people are staying on track academically,” said Rachlin. 

The organization is hoping to receive more donations for those care packages, more devices, as well as to pay the tutors, many of whom are out of work because of the coronavirus shutdowns.
