New data from the NYPD and MTA says subway crime is down. In November, there were nearly 25% fewer crimes on the subways compared to last November. Officials say it's due to drops in robberies, felony assaults and grand larcenies.
While citywide subway crimes are down, the Bronx has had some recent violence on and around subways.
Last week, a man was slashed with a machete outside the West Farms Square East Tremont Station. Three days later, a man was stabbed in the chest at the Bedford Park train station.
The NYPD says most subway crimes are grand larcenies and that there are officers specifically dedicated to combating those types of crimes. It's especially important during the busy holiday season when there's higher foot traffic and tourists.
