Bodega workers rallied on Monday for stronger safety measures after police said an employee was stabbed early Sunday morning.
The NYPD said the 25-year-old bodega worker was stabbed in the head, neck and arm with a knife when that worker attempted to stop the suspect from shoplifting.
Investigators said it happened around 1 a.m. on Sunday of the convenience store at the BP gas station on Westchester Avenue.
The store manager told News 12 on Monday that his employee is doing well and recovering at home.
The United Bodegas of America [UBA] is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
“We are once again asking for our legislators, our elected officials, to open their eyes and see what is happening in their neighborhoods, in their community. We need help!” said Fernando Mateo, spokesman for the United Bodegas of America.
The UBA is asking for the city to install panic buttons, which immediately alert police in emergency situations. The group says the city has installed these panic buttons in at least 50 delis so far.
