Riders on mopeds, bikes and e-bikes should beware if they aren’t following traffic laws.
They can now get criminal summonses for running red lights or not stopping at stop signs. In the past, these infractions would have received regular traffic tickets.
There will be dedicated officers on corridors throughout the city, including in The Bronx. According to Streetsblog, Fordham Road, 149th Street and Tremont Avenue are where dedicated officers will be deployed to enforce this new policy.
Transportation Alternatives says the new policy puts people of cyclists at risk of over policing.
This crackdown is very dangerous because it's putting New Yorkers at risk of arrest, jail and deportation for riding a bike," said Charlie Baker, a spokesperson for the advocacy group.
"Historically, the NYPD has given substantially more criminal summonses for bike operation to New Yorkers of color," he said.
This new policy went into effect last Monday, so expect to see an influx in officers at the routes above.
