An NYPD cruiser was captured on video ramming into a barricade and driving through a crowd as thousands took to the streets Saturday to demand action in the death of George Floyd.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a news conference Saturday night that the incident happened after protesters converged and surrounded the vehicle. The mayor called it a "very tense situation," saying, "Folks converging on that police car did a wrong thing to begin with. I wish the officers found a different approach, but the protesters did the wrong thing to surround that police car, period."
The mayor condemned violence of any kind toward police officers.
Protesters stopped traffic at one point, shutting down parts of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Police sources tell News 12 that at least 47 police cars were vandalized, with windows and windshields smashed and protesters throwing objects at them.
Throughout the night, protesters looted businesses and set fires to trash cans and cars.
News 12 is told more than 300 people were arrested and nearly three dozen officers are recovering from injuries.
