The NYPD confirms to News 12 that an investigation involving the FBI is taking place around East Fordham Road and Hughes Avenue.
Officials have confirmed that the investigation in Belmont is directly connected to the Mount Vernon double homicide case. FBI agents were seen outside Fordham University carrying guns and using drug dogs Tuesday night.
Five people are facing federal charges in what investigators are now describing as a robbery gone wrong.
Ilario Contreras, 23, Jerpi Diaz-Feliz, 25, Jhoan Diaz-Feliz, 23, Victor Jimenez, 35 and Joseph Perez, 26, are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act Roberry, one county of conspiracy to engage in drug trafficking, one count of possessing and discharging a firearm and murder.
They all face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
One man who works at a nearby deli was shocked to see the serious investigation in his neighborhood.
"There's a lot of problems in the city," said the deli employee. "It's scary, everybody wants to be on the safe side."
News 12 is awaiting more information from the U.S. Attorney's Office regarding the investigation and if any of the arrested or wanted suspects are connected to the Bronx.
