A man brandishing a firearm was fatally shot by NYPD officers in Bushwick late Thursday night, according to Chief Juanita Holmes.
She and other NYPD officials held a news conference after midnight. According to Holmes, uniformed officers from the 83rd Precinct heard gunshots near Halsey Street and Wilson Avenue. Upon arrival, they approached a group in front of a liquor store on Halsey Street.
"They observed three individuals who appeared to have sustained gunshot wounds. The officers were informed that an armed man fled the scene on foot, turning westbound onto Wilson Avenue,” said Holmes, who reviewed body camera footage of the incident.
She says the officers approached a man who was crouched on the sidewalk in front of 520 Wilson Ave. who was holding a gun in his left hand.
According to Holmes, officers fatally shot the man after he didn’t comply with orders to drop the gun and pointed at them instead. She says the suspect was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The officers were also taken to an area hospital for observation. It wasn’t clear if they were injured by the gunman.
The three people who suffered gunshot wounds were taken to area hospitals. The chief said that three other firearms were recovered at the scene but did not elaborate own who they belonged to.
