September is National Suicide Prevention Month and some of New York’s finest were honored on Tuesday for their life-saving efforts on the job.

Video from the NYPD’s Aviation Unit shows the tense moments Detective Thomas Longa and his colleagues responded to a woman in distress on the ledge of the Manhattan Bridge. 

They were able to grab her and pull her to safety. Longa says there was no time to be scared and that their training immediately kicked in, and he says he was worried about helping the woman.

Longa was among 60 officers to receive the Hope Award during a ceremony hosted by the NYPD and the NYC Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. 

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea commended each of the officers' actions.

This is the third year the NYPD has held the ceremony.
