Police precincts across the five boroughs are coming together for National Night Out - a nationwide effort focused on building relationships between officers and the communities they serve.
The NYPD says that rain didn't stop the festivities and that precincts were prepared move the fun inside if needed.
Over 70 spots across NYC hosted an evening of free activities to bring families and officers together. The 43rd Precinct in the Bronx had a fun night of face painting, bouncy houses and food for everyone to enjoy.
"It's extremely important because we live out here, we are part of the community," said Yerlin Moya, commanding officer of the 43rd Precinct. "We want them to know that we are part of the community. In order to make that... possible, we have to spend time together on a personal level."
The NYPD's 77th Precinct took over Brower Park in Crown Heights to offer rides, games, music, live entertainment and free giveaways in the community. This comes after a 13-year-old was fatally shot a few blocks away earlier this year.
"We organized something on the corner to remember the child and the and really make a statement that the community doesn't want this kind of, violence here," said Rabbi Eli Cohen of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council. "You have children playing alongside, the police are organizing it, and the whole community is involved. And it's not us and them. It's all one together."
