The NYPD released the bodycam footage showing the moments surrounding a police lieutenant being shot while trying to make an arrest in Morrisania.
The footage shows NYPD officers chasing after a suspect with a gun just before midnight on Friday near 1364 Lyman Place.
Even after taking the suspect to the ground, officers are heard telling him to stop going for his gun - struggling with him until the gun goes off.
Police tell News 12 that a lieutenant was shot in the ankle.
Still, the struggle between the officers and suspect is seen continuing for a few minutes, with police trying to cuff him while he apparently keeps going for his gun.
Eventually more officers are seen arriving and the struggle is seen intensifying.
The suspect is heard still fighting. The officers never returned fire, according to the NYPD.
Eventually, the officers were able to arrest the suspect. News 12 was told the man is well-known to them as a gang member with previous gun-related arrests.
Officials say that upon getting to central booking, the suspect requested to be taken to the hospital.
The lieutenant who was shot is expected to make a full recovery.
