Police officers joined colleagues from across the city Friday to remember 23 members of the NYPD who were killed during the Sept. 11 attacks.
Some of the officers who paid their respects were from the 41st Precinct on Longwood Avenue. Members of precinct lined up outside as the names of those killed were read.
This year, students from St. Athanasius School and Hyde Leadership Charter School attended the memorial and joined officers in prayer and song.
"The NYPD responded to the World Trade Center buildings in a show of strength and courage that earned us the respect of the world," said Deputy Inspector Martine N. Materasso. "Twenty-three brave members did not return from Ground Zero. We honor them daily by protecting the American way of life."
