Transit crime is on the rise, according to the latest statistics from the NYPD.
The statistics show that transit crime is up 6.5 percent from last year citywide. Transit crime in the Bronx is up 8 percent.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says that while violent crimes are down on subways, the majority of subway crimes are pickpocketing incidents, and about half the crimes on subways target sleeping passengers.
Experts speculate that with the cold winter months ahead, more homeless people may seek shelter in subway stations, which may further increase subway crime incidents.
About 5.6 million commuters board the subways daily during the work week.
