Temperatures dropping means flu season is upon us. News 12 spoke with Dr. Inessa Gendlina an epidemiologist at Montefiore Einstein about the numbers in cases and what to do to prevent getting sick.
"In New York City and New York State we are seeing an increase in flu numbers,” said Dr. Gendlina.
The State Health Department says the flu is now widespread, with cases up 72% in New York City.
Dr. Gendlina says an increase in hospital patients are showing a greater increase of cases.
"Patients who are coming in with symptoms are the ones who are getting tested do it's not unreasonable for us to see high percentages,”said Dr. Gendlina.
New Yorkers tell News 12 they are hoping for the best and preparing for the worst, so they don't get sick.
"People should feel very comfortable and very confident wearing a mask if they choose to wear a mask. People who are sick and symptomatic should avoid gathering and stay at home,” said Dr. Gendlina.
Dr. Gendlina also says washing your hands more often and avoiding touching your face are also great practices to not get the flu.
"We encourage everybody to get their flu vaccine early so that they're optimally protected by the time the flu season hits, which is about now,” said Dr. Gendlina.
