A 19-year-old girl who was involved in a crash with an on-duty Franklin police officer driving in his marked police cruiser has died.

The crash happened on Monday at the intersection of Route 23 and Walsh Road in Franklin Borough, Sussex County. Deanna D’Arco died two days later.

Days after the crash, a memorial is in place at the site. Reconstruction paint is also visible.

“The sound of the crash was horrible,” said witness Corie Marquart. “It looked really bad. You knew somebody was really, really hurt.”

D’Arco was the passenger in one of the cars involved in the crash. It happened just after 10:30 a.m. on Monday. She died from her injuries early Wednesday morning. Her driver was treated and released.

According to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, an on-duty Franklin police officer was the other driver, operating a department vehicle.

Witnesses say this happened minutes after the borough’s Memorial Day parade.

“The parade is ending, and I see the cop fly past me southbound,” Marquart said. “I’m like, ‘Why is he going so fast?’ So, I turn around and look behind me, and I see this car pulling out onto [Route] 23.”

Eyewitnesses say the cars T-boned. The attorney general’s office has not released any information about the officer’s identity or status. It’s still undetermined if speed or any other factors played a role.

The D’Arco family raised a New Jersey Sharing Network flag outside Morristown Medical Center Friday morning - making D’Arco an organ donor.

“She can save up to eight lives with organ donation and enhance up to 75 more with tissue donation,” said Amy Young, from NJ Sharing Network.

“She’s been my hero for years already, and now she can be a hero for others,” said her father, Steven D’Arco.
