Public defenders and elected officials are calling on Mayor Eric Adams to rescind his appointment of Erick Salgado as assistant commissioner of outreach for the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs.
The Legal Aid Society said that Mr. Salgado rallied against marriage equality in 2011 and then was endorsed by a nonprofit group opposed to same-sex marriage in his unsuccessful 2013 mayoral campaign bid.
Councilman Chi Osse also tweeted out a statement from the city's LGBTQ+ Caucus and said in part, "NYC went to the polls in November to elect a government among the most diverse in history. The mayor's new appointments are a step in the opposite direction."
Rev. Salgado responded to News 12 saying he is proud to serve under Mayor Adams and that his views have evolved as society has evolved. He says that as the assistant commissioner, his mission will be to lift up immigrant communities including LGBTQ+ immigrants.
