Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that consumed the home at 359 N. Main St. in Port Chester Sunday night.

According to reports, there was heavy fire that started just before 10 p.m. on the second and third floors of the multifamily, three-story home.

All five residents living in the building were able to exit safely. They came back Monday morning to salvage anything they could. They say they are staying with relatives for now.

They told News 12 that they heard popping or explosions and then saw flames. Sources say the popping sound was likely caused by aerosol cans.

"I was terrified because I've never seen anything that close, never felt heat from a fire, not in my own house," said neighbor Amanda Jahncke.

Crews from at least 12 other departments came in to help Port Chester's firefighters. It took about an hour and a half to get the flames under control.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
