A family of four is without a home after a fire tore through their apartment Thursday morning, destroying nearly all of their belongings.
The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. on the third floor of a building at 222 Lenox Road.
Seventeen-year-old Liandra Munroe was in her bedroom when she heard weird crackling sounds in the wall.
“I thought it was just rats, because, you know, we live in NYC,” she said.
But soon noticed the light sparking and the smell of smoke.
No injuries were reported, but the apartment was left charred.
The family exclusively told News 12 they had been reporting water damage in the unit above for months, and they believe it may have contributed to the fire.
“It’s messed up,” said Dorian Mann, Liandra’s stepfather. “This could’ve been easily avoided.”
This is the second fire in the building in recent years. In 2021, a separate blaze damaged apartments on the other side of the complex.
Some of those units are still unrepaired, nearly four years later, according to the tenant's association. They're now calling for faster repairs.
Building's management has not responded to requests for comment.
