Officials say a U.S. Marshal has been released from the hospital while one other and an NYPD detective are still recovering from a shootout that killed a suspect.
The Wakefield section of the Bronx was flooded with NYPD officers and deputies from the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force early Friday morning. Officials say they were searching for 35-year-old Andre Sterling, a fugitive on the Massachusetts Most Wanted List.
Sterling had been on the run from police after he allegedly shot and injured a state trooper during a traffic stop on Cape Cod two weeks ago.
Investigators say they had been looking for Sterling and tracked him down to his home on Ely Avenue. That's when police say he came out of a back room and started shooting.
Shots fired back and forth between Sterling, a second suspect and five U.S. Marshals in a narrow hallway of a residential home.
Sterling was shot multiple times and was killed on impact. Two U.S. Marshals were shot too, one in the leg and the other in the arm and leg. Both were taken to NYC Health and Hospitals Jacobi to be treated for their injuries. An NYPD detective who was on scene was injured as well.
A second suspect was seen on video being taken to the hospital.
U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling issued a statement on the shooting saying the officers were executing a fugitive warrant issued by his office in Massachusetts.
Lelling's statement said in part, "At a time of constant, opportunistic and absurd anti-police rhetoric, this is today's reminder of the sacrifices law enforcement officers make every day to keep us safe."
Both U.S. Marshals are expected to make a full recovery.
