A police officer shot and injured a man who was armed with a gun Sunday evening in the Bronx, officials say.

It happened at West 166th Street and Summit Avenue around 7 p.m. News 12 is told that an NYPD officer encountered a man in his 50s who was in possession of a firearm.

A police source tells News 12 that the suspect pulled out the gun while he was allegedly trying to break into a vehicle.

The officer opened fire, striking the man in the hip and the torso. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital in serious condition.

Video taken by a witness shows police tangled up with the man. Seconds later, two gun shots are heard.

That witness says the man claimed his innocence during the arrest.

"He had the keys in his hand and they took the key but he was saying 'it's my car,'" said Mercedez. "He didn't know why he was being arrested and also screaming. He was screaming, 'I know my rights.' When the guy was on the floor he was still resistant like this and that's when the other one with the gun shot him twice."

During a press conference, officials said the man showed keys in his hand but those keys did not belong to the car that had windows smashed.

The NYPD confirms that the male had a gun.

The police officers were taken to the hospital to get checked on. Neither had any injuries.
