Omicron variant confirmed in Suffolk; 5 total cases reported in New York

The first case of the omicron variant on Long Island was confirmed out of a lab in Suffolk County.
Officials say the 67-year-old woman recently returned from South Africa and her symptoms were mild, including a cough and headache.
Gov. Kathy Hochul says there was also a vaccination history, but it’s unknown if it was one dose, two doses, or both and a booster shot.
“We should be concerned about every variant. We learned a lot about delta, how infectious it is. It looks like this new variant will be as infectious. We have not seen that it is more deadly,” says Dr. Sharon Nachman, Stony Brook Medicine.
The Long Islander is one of five of the first cases in New York. The other four were in the New York City area.
In addition, a Minnesota man who had recently attended a convention at the Javits Center also tested positive.
Officials are urging those who were at the convention to get tested.
Health experts are urging people to get their boosters and go back to wearing masks at indoor public places.
