A Bronx mother who knows all too well what it feels like to not have much is inspiring people to give back, one meal at a time.
Cooking is a passion of Sobeyra Almonte. The food she cooks is not just for her and her family, but for the people most in need.
Every week Almonte cooks hundreds of meals for the homeless.
Her drive to give back is fueled by her past. Almonte is a domestic violence survivor. She says her former abuser became enraged when he found out she was pregnant with her second child.
"He wanted me to have an abortion and I refused. That is when he told me that I had to leave, and I took the biggest decision of my life become homeless to save my child,” says Almonte.
After months of living on the streets, she found her way and eventually fell in love with a man named Sherman Richmond.
“I as a social worker was able to help her to improve some of the circumstances she was going through and the moment that I saw her she took my heart away,” says Richmond.
Almonte went on to earn her GED, her college degree, and three days a week she and her family pack up meals and hands out was she calls love.
She says she wants people falling on hard times to know that there is hope.
"There is still a lot of people who are full of life to give, there’s still a lot of angels out there,” says Almonte.
