NYC DOT is already gearing up for next year’s Open Streets season.

Applications are now open for partners wanting to help use streets in their neighborhood, for public spaces.

In Brooklyn Heights, Montague Street and Hicks Street have already been part of the more than 200 open street locations in the city.

A recent redesign is clearing the roadway for even more vibrancy in the area.

The DOT says Open Streets are meant to promote economic development, support local participating schools, facilitate pedestrian and bike mobility — all while providing new ways for Brooklynites to build community.

Some new businesses, like Good Vets in Brooklyn Heights, say they’ve benefited from the program and are looking forward to another Open Streets season in 2026.

“I think it's a really great opportunity,” said Allison Lazu, an employee at Good Vets. “Especially for new businesses, it helps put eyes on them. We were able to market and also just get to make really good community connections. It's also great for the kids that live over here, free space. Being pretty biased since I do work out of a practice, just the animal-themed events are really cool too.”

Community partners looking to fill out an application for open streets in their area can do so HERE.
