A local organization hit a home run Tuesday night with a charity softball game to raise money to rebuild homes and schools in Puerto Rico.

New York Disaster Interfaith Services organized the game. NYDIS says the recovery process has been slow and challenging after Hurricane Irma and Maria left the island in shambles.

Puerto Rico has made headlines recently with Gov. Ricardo Rossello being called to resign after he was accused of mocking hurricane victims.

NYDIS has helped 115 evacuees gain permanent housing. The organization says there are about 273 open cases for evacuees currently in need of assistance.
