'Out in full force': NYPD ready to protect New Year's Eve revelers
2019 is coming to a close next week, and the NYPD is preparing for the massive annual Time's Square celebration.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot F. Shea said planning around this New Year's Eve celebration began when the last piece of confetti fell after last year's celebration.
This year, revelers can expect heavy security come Tuesday.
It has been a collaborative effort between many agencies and departments, including Secret Service, state police, the FBI, and more. Thousands of police officers will be assigned to Times Square and the surrounding areas.
Most of them will be in uniform, but several teams will not be. NYPD canines are also trained to detect explosives.
The aviation unit will be above, checking out rooftops and the crowds. Drones will also be utilized depending on the weather.
Chief of Department Terence Monahan says it is an enormous undertaking to both plan and protect, but that there is no specific credible threat.
"Revelers can rest assured that nobody secures large-scale events better than the NYPD. Our men and women in blue will be out in full force protecting the ball drop in Times Square and in numerous other celebrations throughout the city," said Monahan.
Shea says that with the millions of eyes and ears that will be out there, they're asking the public to stay vigilant and as always-- if you see something, say something -- that includes anything that doesn't feel right or makes you feel uncomfortable.
