Bronx community members participated in the Out of the Darkness walk at Shoelace Park to spread awareness about suicide prevention.
More than 100 walked in memory of someone, while others are walked for themselves or in alliance for the cause. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosted the event.
Dionne Monsanto lost her 15-year-old daughter to suicide in 2011 and says 45,000 people die by suicide annually in the US.
"It's really important that we have the conversation, raise awareness, and create research so people understand why it happens, people understand that there's support, that there's help, that they're not alone," says Monsanto.
This year, the organization is funding $2 million in grants for suicide research and to reduce the annual suicide rate 20 percent by the year 2025.
