A dog that was struck by a car in Mastic is alive, thanks to the help of a group of animal lovers.

Goddess, a 9-year-old pit bull, was severely injured in the incident.

A good Samaritan brought the dog to an animal hospital for treatment.

“She started trying to get up and she couldn’t,” says John Neikens, of Mastic. “She couldn’t stand up.”

Neikens called several places to see if they would help Goddess until a vet specialist from Bohemia agreed to.

News 12 is told the owner of the pit bull asked for the dog to be euthanized, but the owner of a Sayville dog grooming business, Michael Genovesi, stepped in and agreed to take over ownership of Goddess and the medical bills for her care.

“Any dog that needs help is just what I like to do,” Genovesi says.

News 12 is told the vet bill for Goddess is at least $14,000. A GoFundMe has been made to help with the costs.
