A long line of people hoping to get their hands on baby formula formed Monday outside of Masjid Hamza, the Islamic Center of the South Shore.

Parents headed to the local donation location amid the nationwide shortage of formula.

The desperation being felt by parents across Long Island inspired Sheharyar Ali, a new dad himself, to organize a donation drive.

"A woman already has so much on her plate with a newborn and having to worry about feed a child--no mother should have to be put in that position," Ali says.

Organizations including the South Asian America Small Business Association, Toys for Eid and Masjid Hamza collaborated to run a formula drive and have collected over $3,000 worth of it.

The donations came from Long Islanders who had extra formula, friends shipping it in from other states and a digital research effort to find it available online by teens.

"With the digital age and everything, I feel that young people are more connected to it, and they have an understanding on how to incorporate ideas and technology into things that everyone needs, such as formula," says Jai Kaur, a volunteer.

The donations will also be going to 11 shelters through the Department of Social Services--all shelters who have children living there under the age of 1. News 12 is told there is more on the way.
