One local library is turning 50 this month and to celebrate, readers are taking a trip down memory lane.
The Pelham Parkway Van Nest Library opened on Barnes Avenue on June 20, 1968.
To mark its 50th birthday, the library has adopted a 1960s theme. High school students worked on 1960s dress designs to display at the center of the library.
There are also American Girl doll exhibits and 1960s music books decorating the walls. Readers are also able to watch old movies.
“This is the time of year that we typically kick off summer reading for our younger library visitors, but since were celebrating this anniversary, we wanted to can bind that with a celebration of the library as a whole and its place in this community for 50 years,” says library manager David Nochimson.
Before the library branch moved to Barnes Avenue, it operated out of a small storefront on Rhinelander Avenue. Its name has also changed several times.
