Residents in the Morris Park section of the Bronx are coming together to call on the city’s Department of Transportation to make their neighborhood safer. 

The DOT tells News 12 the area is on the department’s radar. After seeing multiple accidents occur at the same spot in his neighborhood, Aladin Alibasic tells News 12 he had to do something. 

“People are doing highway speeds over 55 to 60 miles an hour and this is a residential neighborhood,” Alibasic tells News 12. 

So, he says he went door to door and got the support of his community. He created a petition to send to the DOT and called for safety measures to be put in place at the corner of Bogart and Pierce avenues. 

There are all-way stop signs and speed bumps, daylighted corners and other measures nearby on Pierce Avenue to slow vehicles down. 

Alibasic and others who have signed his petition say there should be clear crosswalks, speed bumps, cameras and other signage right at the intersection.

In a statement, a DOT spokesperson says, "We are aware of the community concerns and will continue to evaluate Pierce Avenue for additional traffic calming treatments."

Alibasic sent the petition to State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi and Councilman Mark Gjonaj, hoping they'd step in and hold the DOT accountable.

Sen. Biaggi tells News 12 she's escalated this matter to the DOT and is monitoring updates. 

Councilman Gjonaj also says he will be working directly with residents to make sure that the city implements a solution to this problem.
