Officials say 12 cars were stolen from the Hauppauge and St. James areas in a 48-hour time period.

As News 12 has reported, five of the cars were stolen within a one-hour period. Police say those cars were stolen outside residences on Benzel Lane, Sandra Drive, Steven Place and Maureen Drive between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on March 17.

Police say all of those vehicles were unlocked with key fobs that were inside.

Suffolk police are advising people to lock their doors, take the keys out and not to leave any valuables in the car.

David Doherty, deputy inspector and commanding officer for the Suffolk County Police Department, says suspects go to different driveways and try to open the car doors. If the door is open, he says they take what is inside. If the key fob is in it, they will take the entire vehicle

Police say 10 of the cars have been recovered.

They say they are searching for two to three suspects. No arrests have been made.

"At the direction of Commissioner Harrison, we are increasing the patrols in the areas of the most recent car thefts," says Gerard Hardy, chief of patrol for Suffolk County police.

News 12 spoke with one woman who found her stolen car down the block from her home. She says they made off with her wallet, laptop and more.

"I feel a little unsafe," she says. "We are locking all the cars, locking all the windows."

Police have not released descriptions of the alleged criminals.
