Police: 6 minors aged 12-14 arrested after stolen car crashes while fleeing police

Six children between the ages of 12 and 14 are facing charges for allegedly stealing a car and leading police on a chase.
Fairfield police say that incident happened on Sunday around 3 a.m. They say that they received a call from a person who lives on Big Pierce Road that several people were pulling on car door handles in his driveway. They were seen driving away in a red sedan, according to police.
Police say that officers spotted this car and tried to get the driver to pull over, but the driver refused, and a chase began. Police say that the officers ended the chase once the speeds became too dangerous. The red sedan eventually crashed a short time later in West Caldwell.
Police say that three of the juveniles were arrested after the crash and taken to Fairfield Police Headquarters.
West Caldwell police soon began receiving calls that three other juveniles were banging on doors in a residential area not far from the crash. Police soon found out that these three juveniles were also in the car that crashed.
All six minors were charged with receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, conspiracy, burglary, and possession of burglary tools.
“This case strongly emphasizes the problem of the continuing stolen car epidemic in New Jersey as the ages of the juvenile offenders involved in this case ranged between 12-14 years of age with one of these offenders having a court-ordered monitoring device on him at the time of the arrest,” Fairfield Police Chief Anthony Manna wrote in a statement. “Until there are meaningful consequences for such activity or until our society can divert these youthful offenders away from committing such crimes and rather be involved in other productive activity, we will continue to be faced with this problem.”
Five of the children were released to the custody of their parents, while one was remanded to the Essex County Youth House in Newark. Their names were not released due to their age.
