A 28-year-old Cranford man is accused of placing a dead cat inside of a neighbor’s mailbox earlier this year.
Police say Steven Elias was seen on surveillance video walking up to a home on Collins Street on March 12 around 10 p.m. with an object in his hand that was believed to be a carcass of a cat. He then appears to place the carcass in the home’s mailbox.
This video was shared on social media as people attempted to find out who the person was.
Police were eventually able to identify Elias as the person in the video and charged him.
Elias was charged with causing fear of unlawful bodily violence, harassment and criminal trespass. He was issued a summons pending an appearance at Union County Superior Court.
