Officials say that the teacher driving the car that struck and killed a 57-year-old man Friday morning on Pelham Parkway has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.
Sources say the victim, Raymong Bolan, had just underwent detox treatments at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi.
Police say Bolan died in the hospital after being hit.
The driver, 33-year-old Shakira Pierce, was arrested at the scene after undergoing a field sobriety test.
Pierce is facing charges including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police also say Pierce was fleeing after hitting a car when she struck Bolan as he was crossing the street.
The suspect teaches at Schulyerville Preparatory High School.
The Department of Education released a statement that says "This is a tragic incident and our hearts go out to the victim's family. These allegations are appalling and disgraceful."
The statement also says Pierce has been reassigned away from students.
